Elizabeth

"Elizabeth' anonymously published her first novel, Elizabeth and her German Garden, in September 1898. It went into eleven reprints before the end of the year; and full-page articles in the papers demanded to know the identity of the author. She was at that time a countess, wife of a Prussian Junker, an ex-army officer, unsuccessful banker and by then an experimental farmer close to ruin. They lived with their three daughters in a remote corner of Pomerania.
